Deceptively simple illustrations grace eleven short poems written in four-line stanzas. The rhymes, the vocabulary and the rhythm combine to create harmonious and relaxed suggestive poems that are unpredictable and unusual. The poems speak of the sea, the wind, and boats, but most of all the animals: a fish, a whale, a seahorse, a crab, a squid, and so on. In most cases, they are tales of departures and arrivals, partings and meetings. They all convey a powerful message to the child reader: that she is safe. Jure Jakob (1977) is a renowned Slovenian poet, though most of his work has been written for adult audiences. Ana Jerčič Jakob is a painter and illustrator who holds MAs in Painting and Graphic Prints. The Sea is her first picture book.
