It's not easy to change schools so often, as is the case for travellers who are constantly on the road. Geronimo is the new kid every time, and he has to contend with the incomprehension of the adults - those around him don't see the point of him going to school outside his community - as well as the hostility of the children and the prejudices of their parents. But Geronimo loves to study, and this time he meets a wonderful teacher who understands his interest and puts the bullies in their place. This lovely novel is written in the first person, and it accurately and fatalistically describes the child's observations and defence strategies. His mother is a true courageous woman who believes in education. The author positively dismantles the mechanisms of ostracism and rejection. Thomas Baas's illustrations enhance this touching story.
