The adolescent Nova's growing up is characterised by "multiplicities". Together with her younger half-brother and mother, she has only just escaped her stepfather's violent sphere of influence and now finds herself in an empty flat. The verse novel traces her newfound everyday life. Slowly, she overcomes the emotional and physical injuries of the past. She finds help from her old and new friends, her passion for roller skating and dancing as well as her first crush. Chantal-Fleur Sandjon tells the story of a complex identity in vividly condensed poetry. With this verse novel, which is still rare in the German-speaking world, she inscribes herself in an American tradition of the spoken word community and expands it for a German-speaking context. Growing up as a Black, queer young woman in Germany is developed in all its facets. The combination of an individual fate with cultural memory is exemplary. By mentioning contemporary issues such as structural racism and police violence as well as historical events, the novel fills a gap in the canon of German youth literature. Black history is understood as part of German history.
