In Tune is the winner of the 2012 Bologna Ragazzi Award in the Non Fiction category. This original form of music instruction, exceptional in its literary and visual qualities, takes as its framework the presentation of a symphonic orchestra just before the concert, when the instruments are being tuned. The book's outstanding power of artistic expression is truly mesmerizing. The cover itself shows a surprisingly muscular trombonist with his sleeveless vest partly exposes his broad torso and looking like a New Orleans musician. This association points the reader to the background context of the birth of the modern popular culture. Introducing pop-culture icons into the world of classical music (the main subject of the book) is only one example of integrating incongruities that seem to be impossible to combine, which underlies the originality of the author’s style. This book was selected for the IBBY Honour List 2014.
