Butalci is a series of tales by Fran Milčinski (1867–1932), first published in a variety of newspapers and only posthumously in a single collection. It has since become one of the most famous works of Slovenian satirical writing, as relevant today as it was a century ago. Butalci are the inhabitants of an imaginary town of Butale, which is a caricature of a typical Slovenian town. They believe themselves to be very clever and important, even though they’re actually quite dim. This new illustrated edition brings a fresh twist to the collection, as Peter Škerl’s illustrations bind the tales together in a new, original way. Peter Škerl, one of Slovenia’s best contemporary illustrators, brings the old evergreen tales to a wide modern public, both children and adults.
