Two Captains is Veniamin Kaverin’s famous adventure novel, one of the most popular works among Russian teenagers.
The action of the novel takes place in two different layers of time and is associated with two characters. At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1910-1912 Polar explorer captain Tatarinov, leader of an Arctic expedition, goes missing.
In 1920-40 there is Sanya Grigoryev, a mute homeless boy, an orphan, who later becomes a Polar pilot. He fights against the Nazis, flies over the Arctic, and finds there the lost expedition of Captain Tatarinov.
The stubborn and resolute temper of Sanya Grigoryev helps him to live according to the oath he swore to himself as a child: «To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield».
