Being home, not feeling homely, origin and deracination can blend into each other, Emma experiences. Her mother moves with Emma and the other siblings to her original home in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. 20 years ago, Emma´s mother went to Dublin as an au pair. Now, after breaking up with the children´s dad, she has to return to the rural area by the Baltic Sea, begin a new life in old surroundings. The three siblings deal in different ways with feeling foreign: Emmas little sister stops speaking, her older brother dives into the village life – Emma secretly plans her return to Dublin. After Emma meets Levin, he becomes an important friend, supporter and listener for her. When she sees how complicated his family life is, she questions whether her attitude on her own situation is reasonable.
Susan Kreller tells a story about returning and being foreign and impressively shows Emma´s experience of not settling down.
The poetic language combined with Emma´s story perfectly shows that home is a feeling first of all.
