Munduari bira eman zion ontzia is an illustrated book resulting from the collaboration between the Basque writer Joseba sarrionandia and the Cuban illustrator Ares.
The book collects the dialogue between a history teacher and her granddaughter about the journey of Juan Sebastian Elkano. And the aim is to promote knowledge and reflection on the first round-the-world trip.
In addition, the story gives space to the raising of multiple current problems, throughout a lively conversation and not devoid of irony. Playing with the double meaning of the Basque word 'ontzia' -which can be both: ship and vessel-. The author affirms that the book is also a container for memory and critical spirit. Sarrionandia has used the work to reflect on liberty: both that of the Basques and that of people all around the world. It also offers answers and, above all, questions to try to understand such complex issues as power relations, cultural differences, inequality, historical memory, racism, sexism and globalization.
Ares has collaborated several times with Sarrionandia, doing the covers of some of his books, but this was the first time he illustrated the complete work. Moreover, when he started working on the book, it was not yet written.
Both wanted the book to have more than one reading.
